Laser Hair Removal
Kathy Sheraw RN, CLS

When I entered my teenage years, I developed upper lip hair.

I was so embarrassed by it that I never wanted anyone to talk about it. As far as I knew, I was the only girl in school with a mustache. I never talked to my best friend about it

I have three older brothers who liked to keep me updated on the status of my upper lip.

It was most gratifying to them, it seemed, if they could point it out to me when we were on the way to a party or picnic where I just knew that for the rest of the day that anyone talking to me was hearing nothing I said because they couldn’t get past my mustache! This did great things for my self esteem. I would bleach the hair on my upper lip only to now have a blond mustache---not as noticeable, but still visible. I couldn’t bring myself to wax (too painful) or shave (too masculine).

My mom had electrolysis on her upper lip hair (hers developed in those menopausal years), while I was bleaching. She felt guilty spending the money on herself as any good mother did in the 70’s and always came home with her upper lip so red and puffy that I was feeling pretty good about the bleaching option. She figures that over the course of the 2 years she had treatments that she spent about $2000. Keep in mind, that was 30 years ago! And by the way, I’m now doing laser treatments on her upper lip area as well.

My best friend from 7th grade came in for her upper lip treatment. I asked her if she remembers the two of us ever talking about our upper lip hair when we were young.

She said she was certain that we never did! There probably wasn’t another topic we didn’t discuss but the topic of facial hair seemed taboo to both of us. Now we’ve reached the age of wearing purple and facial hair is ‘allowed’ but still unwanted. I’m so happy that I can help her get rid of her upper lip hair the way I got rid of mine.

Only now that I have no upper lip hair do I realize how I was consumed by it.

I don’t believe I was ever at a picnic or other outdoor event that I wasn’t wondering what the status of my upper lip was. Now, instead, I can just enjoy the event.

Not having upper lip hair has increased my self confidence.

Having had issues with unwanted hair, it is very satisfying to be able to help other people get rid of their own unwanted hair.
